Arthrolycosa was named by Harger (1874). Its type is Arthrolycosa antiqua. It is the type genus of Arthrolycosidae.

It was assigned to Arthrolycosidae by Eskov and Selden (2005), Dunlop et al. (2013), Selden et al. (2014), Selden (2021) and Dunlop (2023).
