Itaboraidelphys was named by Marshall and de Muizon (1984). Its type is Itaboraidelphys camposi.

It was assigned to Didelphimorphia by Goin et al. (2006); to Didelphidae by Marshall and de Muizon (1984), Ladaveze and Muizon (2010); to Sternbergiidae by Oliveira and Goin (2011); and to Pucadelphyidae by Muizon and Ladevèze (2022).
