Bothriostylops was named by Zheng and Huang (1986). Its type is Bothriostylops notios. It is the type genus of Bothriostylopinae.
It was assigned to Arctostylopidae by Zheng and Huang (1986), Huang and Zheng (2003), Huang (2003); and to Bothriostylopinae by Tong and Wang (2006).
