Taxonomy
Anchitherium australe was named by Burmeister (1879).

It was recombined as Anisolophus australis by Burmeister (1885); it was recombined as Proterotherium australe by Ameghino (1889) and Lydekker (1894).

Synonyms
  • Tetramerorhinus mixtum was named by Ameghino (1894). It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Puesto Estancia La Costa, which is in a Santacrucian terrestrial claystone/sandstone in the Santa Cruz Formation of Argentina.

    It was synonymized subjectively with Proterotherium australe by Soria (2001).
