Nilio was named by Latreille (1829). It is extant. It is the type genus of Nilionini, Nilionidae.
It was assigned to Nilionini by Poinar and Brown (2011); and to Nilioninae by Bousquet et al. (2018), Nabozhenko (2019), Bouchard et al. (2021).
