Sthenurus andersoni was named by Marcus (1962). Its type specimen is AM MF946, a mandible (left dentary fragmeny), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Bone Camp Gully, which is in a Pleistocene terrestrial horizon in Australia.
