Ostrea difformis was named by Schlotheim (1820).

It was recombined as Enantiostreon difforme by Frech (1912) and Gall (1971); it was recombined as Enantiostreon difformis by Awad (1945); it was recombined as Terquemia difformis by Yin and McRoberts (2006).
