Aechmella was named by Canu and Bassler (1917) [Sepkoski's age data: K Ceno-u T Plio Sepkoski's reference number: 519]. It is not extant.

It was assigned to Microporidae by Bassler (1953), Pouyet (2000); to Cheilostomata by Sepkoski (2002); and to Onychocellidae by Brown (1958), Bock (2006), Di Martino and Taylor (2013), Taylor and Martha (2017).
