Pimelia was named by Fabricius (1775). It is extant. It is the type genus of Pimeliinae, Pimeliini, Pimeliariae.
It was assigned to Coleoptera by Latreille (1796); to Eleuterata by Fabricius (1775), Fabricius (1798); to Pimeliariae by Latreille (1802); and to Pimeliini by Bouchard et al. (2011), Bouchard et al. (2021).
