Canda was named by Lamouroux (1816) [Sepkoski's age data: T Eo R]. It is extant. It is the type genus of Candidae.

It was assigned to Scrupocellariidae by Bassler (1953), Brown (1958), Cheetham (1972); to Cheilostomata by Sepkoski (2002); and to Candidae by Bock (2006), Gordon (2012), Di Martino and Taylor (2014).
