Eosagrion was named by Handlirsch (1920). Its type is Eosagrion risi. It is the type genus of Eosagrionidae.

It was assigned to Zygoptera by Carpenter (1992); and to Eosagrionidae by Handlirsch (1920), Bechly (2007).
