Virola tertiaria was named by Berry (1929). It is considered to be a form taxon. It is a 3D fossil preserving soft parts. Its type locality is Belen, Punta PariƱas, which is in a Miocene/Oligocene terrestrial horizon in Peru.

E. W. Berry 1929This species is represented by a single small nut and abut half of a second which is about twice the size of the first. In the range in size, essential form and ornamentation, they agree with the nuts of the Recent Central American Virola warburgii Pittier.
