Taxonomy
Phlebotomus paternus was named by Quate (1963). Its type specimen is UCMP 12746, an exoskeleton, and it is an inclusion in amber. Its type locality is UCMP B-1402, Simojovel area, which is in a Miocene terrestrial amber in Mexico.
It was recombined as Micropygomyia (Sauromyia) paterna by Andrade Filho et al. (2009).
