Agriotes was named by Eschscholtz (1829). It is extant. It is the type genus of Agriotini, Agriotina.
It was assigned to Elateridae by Becker (1963); to Agriotina by Bouchard et al. (2011); and to Agriotini by Barsevskis (2005), Kundrata et al. (2021).
