Phthiria oligocenica was named by Timon-David (1944). It is a compression fossil. Its type locality is Camoins-les-Bains (Timon-David collection), which is in a Chattian lacustrine marl in France.
It was corrected as Phthiria oligocaenicus by Timon-David (1944); it was recombined as Geron oligocaenicus by Evenhuis (1994), Evenhuis and Greathead (1999).
