Anthrax gabbroensis was named by Handlirsch (1907). It is a compression fossil. Its type locality is Gabbro (Bosniaski collection), which is in a Messinian terrestrial horizon in Italy.
It was recombined as Hemipenthes gabbroensis by Evenhuis and Greathead (1999).
