Eucalyptus patagonicus was named by Frenguelli (1953) ["La ramita consta de tres pequeños frutos con sus respectivos pedicelos que salen juntos del extremo de un pedúnculo muy corto. Los tres frutitos, si bien aplastados en posición algo diferente, muestran el mismo tamaño y los mismos detalles morfológicos. Los tres corresponden a frutos maduros, que ya han perdido su caliptra y han abierto sus valvas" Frenguelli, 1953.]. It is a compression preserving soft parts. Its type locality is La Lipela, which is in a Miocene terrestrial tuff in Argentina.
