Eugnamptus proterus was named by Poinar and Brown (2007). Its type specimen is Poinar C-7-402, an exoskeleton, and it is an inclusion in amber. Its type locality is Mexican amber (Poinar coll), which is in a Miocene terrestrial amber in Mexico.
