Molorchus was named by Fabricius (1792). It is extant. It is the type genus of Molorchidae.

It was assigned to Eleuterata by Fabricius (1792); to Coleoptera by Latreille (1796); to Cerambicini by Latreille (1802); to Cerambycidae by Zang (1905); and to Molorchini by Bouchard et al. (2011).
