Taxonomy
Sciophila defossa was named by Brodie (1845). It is a compression fossil. Its type locality is Dinton, Vale of Wardour, Middle Purbeck, which is in a Berriasian lagoonal/restricted shallow subtidal horizon in the Lulworth Formation of the United Kingdom.
It was recombined as Thimna defossa by Giebel (1856), Handlirsch (1906), Johannsen (1909), Oliveira and Amorim (2021).
