Bergounioux (1935) first describes the type species of the genus, Cheirogaster maurini (pp. 78-82), and then describes the new genus (pp. 82-83)

Cheirogaster was named by Bergounioux (1935).
It was assigned to Testudines by Jimenez-Fuentes et al. (1988); to Testudinidae by Karl (2007), Staesche et al. (2007), Perez-Garcia and Murelaga (2013), de la Fuente et al. (2014), Vlachos et al. (2014); and to Testudininae by Vlachos and Rabi (2018).
It was assigned to Testudines by Jimenez-Fuentes et al. (1988); to Testudinidae by Karl (2007), Staesche et al. (2007), Perez-Garcia and Murelaga (2013), de la Fuente et al. (2014), Vlachos et al. (2014); and to Testudininae by Vlachos and Rabi (2018).
