Ectona pilulifera was named by Zhang et al. (1994). It is a compression fossil. Its type locality is Shanwang, Linqu County, collection S200, which is in a Burdigalian lacustrine - large mudstone in the Shanwang Formation of China.
It was recombined as Ecotona pilulifera by Dunlop et al. (2013).
