Smilodontidion riggii was named by Kraglievich (1948). Its type specimen is MACN 6802, a partial skeleton, and it is a 3D body fossil.
It was recombined as Smilodon riggii by McKenna and Bell (1997); it was considered a nomen dubium by Prevosti and Pomi (2007).
