Elaphrus pliocenicus was named by Piton (1939). Its type specimen is Col Piton 1008, an exoskeleton, and it is a compression fossil. Its type locality is Lac Chambon (Piton coll), which is in a Gelasian crater lake diatomite/volcaniclastic in France.
