Taxonomy
Hyaenodon (Isohyaenodon) pilgrimi was named by Savage (1965). Its type specimen is BMNH M. 19100a-c, a partial skeleton (air of complete mandibles with posterior fragment of skull and 7 cervical vertebrae), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Rusinga Island, which is in a Burdigalian terrestrial horizon in Kenya. It is the type species of Exiguodon.

It was recombined as Isohyaenodon pilgrimi by Savage (1956), Morales et al. (1998) and Morales et al. (2007); it was recombined as Exiguodon pilgrimi by Morales and Pickford (2017).
