Trachelas poinari was named by Penney (2001). Its type specimen is Poinar A-10-136, an exoskeleton, and it is an inclusion in amber. Its type locality is Dominican amber (Poinar coll), which is in a Burdigalian/Langhian terrestrial amber in the Dominican Republic.
