Pseudotormentus was named by De Wever and Caridroit (1984) [Sepkoski's age data: P Guad Sepkoski's reference number: 1007].

It was assigned to Spumellaria by Sepkoski (2002); to Ruzhencevispongidae by De Wever et al. (2001) and Thassanapak (2015); and to Cauletellidae by Noble et al. (2017).
