Taxonomy
Protophiomys algeriensis was named by Jaegar et al. (1985). Its type specimen is UON 841, a tooth, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Bir El Ater, which is in a Bartonian/Priabonian deltaic sandstone in Algeria. It is the type species of Protophiomys.
