Taxonomy
Cometodinium was named by Deflandre and Courteville (1940). It is not extant. Its type is Cometodinium obscurum.

It was assigned to Gonyaulacaceae by Deflandre and Courteville (1939); and to Dinophyceae by Andrews (1970).
