Isoperla was named by Banks (1906). It is extant. It is the type genus of Isoperlidae.

It was assigned to Perlidae by Banks (1906); to Perlodidae by Sinitshenkova (1987), Carpenter (1992); and to Isoperlinae by Jouault et al. (2021).
