Taeniopteryx was named by Pictet (1841). It is extant. It is the type genus of Taeniopterygidae, Taeniopteryginae.
It was assigned to Taeniopterygidae by Sinitshenkova (1987), Carpenter (1992); and to Taeniopteryginae by Chen (2018).
