Taxonomy

Strophonella was named by Hall (1879). Its type is Strophomena semifasciata.

It was assigned to Stropheodontidae by Bassett and Cocks (1974), Temple (1987); to Strophomenida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Strophonellidae by Williams et al. (2000), Musteikis and Cocks (2004).
