Carpophilinae was named by Erichson (1842). It is extant.

It was reranked as the tribe Carpophilini by de Jong (1953).

It was assigned to Nitidulinae by de Jong (1953); and to Nitidulidae by Erichson (1843), Lawrence and Newton (1995), Kirejtshuk (2008), Cline et al. (2014), Cai et al. (2022).
