Macromiinae was named by Tillyard (1917). It is extant. Its type is Macromia.

It was reranked as the family Macromiidae by Nel and Paicheler (1994) and Brockhaus et al. (2020).

It was assigned to Libellulidae by Lewis (1969); to Corduliidae by Steinmann (1997); and to Libelluloidea by Nel and Paicheler (1994) and Brockhaus et al. (2020).
