Taxonomy

Chrysopa excelsa was named by Oppenheim (1888). It is an impression. Its type locality is Solnhofen (BSPGM Munich coll), which is in a Tithonian lagoonal/restricted shallow subtidal lime mudstone in the Solnhofen Formation of Germany.

It was synonymized subjectively with Osmylites protogaeus by Handlirsch (1906); it was recombined as Osmylites excelsa by Makarkin and Archibald (2003).

Synonyms

Chrysopa protogaea was named by Hagen (1862). Its type specimen is JME AS V I 1029 1095-1 Nr 3, an exoskeleton, and it is an impression. Its type locality is Eichstätt, Solnhofen (Jura Museum JME and Kümpel collection), which is in a Tithonian lagoonal/restricted shallow subtidal lime mudstone in the Solnhofen Formation of Germany.

It was recombined as Osmylites protogaeus by Handlirsch (1906), Carpenter (1932); it was synonymized objectively with Osmylites excelsa by Makarkin and Archibald (2003); it was considered a nomen nudum by Hagen (1862); it was recombined as Osmylites protogaea by Haase (1890), Martynova (1949), Ponomarenko (2003).
