Onitis was named by Fabricius (1798). It is extant. It is the type genus of Onitides.
It was assigned to Eleuterata by Fabricius (1798); to Coprophagi by Latreille (1802); to Scarabaeinae by Krell (2000); and to Onitini by Bouchard et al. (2011).
