Cretomelolonthini was named by Nikolajev (1998). Its type is Cretomelolontha.

It was reranked as the subfamily Cretomelolonthinae by Nikolajev (2007).

It was assigned to Cetoniidae by Nikolajev (2007); to Melolonthinae by Nikolajev (1998), Bouchard et al. (2011); and to Melolonthinae by Allsopp and Schoolmeesters (2024).
