Taxonomy
Lithoscarabaeus was named by Nikolajev (1992). Its type is Proteroscarabaeus baissensis. It is the type genus of Lithoscarabaeinae.

It was assigned to Lithoscarabaeinae by Nikolajev (1992), Krell (2000); and to Lithoscarabaeidae by Nikolajev (2007).
