Marcopoloichthys was named by Tintori et al. (2008). Its type is Marcopoloichthys ani. It is the type genus of Marcopoloichthyidae.
It was assigned to Neopterygii by Tintori et al. (2011); and to Marcopoloichthyidae by Tintori et al. (2008), Arratia (2022), Arratia et al. (2024).
