Amorphoscelis was named by Stal (1871). It is extant. It is the type genus of Amorphoscelidae, Amorphoscelinae.

It was assigned to Amorphoscelidae by Hennig (1966); and to Amorphoscelinae by Svensen and Whiting (2009).
