Tachinus was named by Gravenhorst (1802). It is extant. It is the type genus of Tachinidae.
It was assigned to Coleoptera by Gravenhorst (1802); to Staphylinidae by Scudder (1900), Hong (1984); to Tachyporini by Horn (1877), Hatch (1957), Herman (2001), Bouchard et al. (2011); and to Tachinusini by Yamamoto (2021), Jenkins Shaw et al. (2024).
