Taxonomy
Mesithone maculosa was named by Makarkin (1999). Its type specimen is PIN 1989/36, a forewing, and it is a compression fossil. Its type locality is Baissa (PIN collection 1989, layer 19), which is in an Aptian lacustrine - large siltstone/marl in the Zaza Formation of the Russian Federation.
