Taxonomy
Aix was named by Boie (1828). It is extant. Its type is Anas sponsa. It was considered unknown by Emslie (1998).

It was assigned to Anseres by Shufeldt (1891); to Anatinae by Hay (1930), Wetmore (1940); to Anatini by Zelenkov (2012); and to Anatidae by Hay (1902), Emslie (1998), Zelenkov and Kurochkin (2012), Clements et al. (2017).
