Taxonomy
Lampyris was named by Geoffroy (1762). It is extant. It is the type genus of Lampyridae, Lampyrinae, Lampyrini.
It was assigned to Coleoptera by Geoffroy (1762), Schaeffer (1766), Linnaeus (1767), Forster (1771), Müller (1776), Latreille (1796); to Eleuterata by Fabricius (1775), Fabricius (1798); to Malacodermi by Latreille (1802); and to Lampyrini by Bouchard et al. (2011), Martin et al. (2019).
