Attenuatella was named by Stehli (1954) [Sepkoski's age data: P Asse-l P Guad-l Sepkoski's reference number: 7,417]. Its type is Attenuatella texana.

It was assigned to Spiriferida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Ambocoeliinae by Williams et al. (2006).
