Protonephrocerini was named by Aczél (1948). It is extant.

It was reranked as the subfamily Protonephrocerinae by Kehlmaier et al. (2014) and Motamedinia et al. (2022).

It was assigned to Nephrocerinae by Archibald et al. (2014); and to Pipunculidae by Kehlmaier et al. (2014) and Motamedinia et al. (2022).
