Brachystoma was named by Meigen (1822). It is extant. It is the type genus of Brachystomatidae.
It was assigned to Empididae by Aldrich (1905), Evenhuis (1994); to Brachystomatinae by Sinclair and Cumming (2006); and to Brachystomatini by Wahlberg and Johanson (2018).
