Permothemidae was named by Martynov (1935). Its type is Permothemis.

It was corrected as Permothemistidae by Sinitshenkova (1980) and Carpenter (1992).

It was assigned to Archodonata by Martynov (1935) and Demoulin (1954); to Permothemistida by Sinitshenkova (1980); and to Palaeodictyoptera by Carpenter (1992).
