Proetus girvanensis was named by Nicholson and Etheridge (1879). It is the type species of Paraproetus, Neoproetus (Paraproetus).
It was recombined as Paraproetus girvanensis by Přibyl (1964), Jell and Adrain (2002), Owens (2004).
