Protolenidae was named by Richter and Richter. Its type is Protolenus.
It was considered an invalid subgroup of Ellipsocephalidae by Adrain (2011); it was reranked as the subfamily Protoleninae by Cederstrom et al. (2022) and El Albani et al. (2024).
It was assigned to Redlichiida by Palmer and Gatehouse (1972); and to Ellipsocephalidae by Cederstrom et al. (2022) and El Albani et al. (2024).
